Award Year 2010
Bráulio Fonseca Carneiro de Albuquerque, a PhD student at the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), received the 2010 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. Bráulio's supervisors are Fabiano L. de Sousa who specializes in evolutionary optimization techniques and Amauri S. Montes who specializes in optical system design. At INPE, Braulio also works as an optical designer on space borne optical systems. The Kidger Scholarship Award was presented to Bráulio by Tina Kidger at the International Optical Design Conference (IODC), June  14, 2010, The Snow King Resort, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA.

Bráulio F.C. de Albuquerque majored in Physics at the Federal University of South Mato-Grosso- Brazil in 2001. He received his M.Sc. degree in Engineering and Space Technology from the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in 2005. During his master’s program Mr. Albuquerque carried out studies about the influence of optical aberrations on the star position determination errors for a fixed-head autonomous star tracker, and also suggested a methodology for reducing them.

Mr. Albuquerque's research interests are in methods for optimization of optical systems. His Ph.D. research focus is the investigation and development of new evolutionary optimization techniques for application in optical systems design. He has recently spent three months on a research project in the College of Optical Science at the University of Arizona, under the supervision of Prof. Jose Sasian, where he worked on the development of an optimized multi-objective technique of glass selection for super-achromatic optical systems of remote sensing cameras.
