Institute of Optics Colloquia | University of Rochester
On September 14, 2026, the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics hosted an afternoon celebrating optical science, education, and the next generation of optical designers. The event included the presentation of the 2026 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship to Jacob A. Sacks by Tina E. Kidger, along with a guest lecture by Dr. Joseph A. Shaw of Montana State University.

Presentation of the 2026 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship
Tina E. Kidger, CEO of Kidger Optics Associates, presented the 2026 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship to Jacob A. Sacks, a graduate student at the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics.
Sacks conducts research within the Institute’s Julie Bentley Research Group. The scholarship recognizes his academic achievements, dedication to optical design, and promise as an emerging professional in the field.
Established in 1998 in memory of Michael J. Kidger, an accomplished optical designer, educator, and software developer, the Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship supports talented graduate students pursuing careers in optical design. The award honors Michael’s contributions to the optics community and his commitment to advancing optical design through education and mentorship.
The annual presentation continues this tradition by recognizing outstanding students and encouraging the next generation of optical designers. Read more about Jacob A. Sacks.
Guest Lecture Explores the Beauty of Optics in Nature
Dr. Joseph A. Shaw presenting his lecture on Optics in Nature at the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics.
The event also featured a lecture by Dr. Joseph A. Shaw, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Optical Technology Center at Montana State University, titled “Learning to See: Some of Jim Wyant’s Favorite Optics in Nature Photos from My Collection.”
Drawing on his lifelong interest in photography and optical science, Dr. Shaw explored the fascinating optical phenomena found in the natural world, including rainbows, atmospheric halos, glitter patterns, and the aurora borealis.
His presentation also highlighted the influence of James C. Wyant, whose encouragement and support helped advance Shaw’s photography and research, as well as the development of Montana State University’s optics program.
Through photographs, scientific explanations, and personal experiences, Dr. Shaw demonstrated how observing light in nature can inspire scientific curiosity and a deeper understanding of optics.
A recognized leader in optical remote sensing, Dr. Shaw has contributed to research involving environmental imaging, atmospheric measurements, and advanced optical instrumentation. He is a Fellow of SPIE and Optica and received the 2025 Alumnus of the Year Award from the University of Arizona’s James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences.
Supporting the Future of Optical Design
The gathering reflected the Institute of Optics’ commitment to scientific discovery, education, and professional development. Dr. Shaw’s lecture highlighted the connections between observation and innovation, while the scholarship presentation recognized the importance of supporting students who will help shape the future of optical design.
